2017 | Developing Water Supply and Waste Water GIS of Bulancak, Turkey using QGIS

Under its IPA (instrument for Pre-Accession) program, the EU provides Technical Assistance to bring both water supply and waste water systems up to standards in some 400 cities across Turkey. One of those cities is Bulancak, a town of about 40.000 inhabitants that lies on the Turkish Black Sea coast. In the recent past a new water supply system has been built and a new waste water system is under construction. The town’s water utility BULASKI is responsible for operation and maintenance of the systems and for customer support. A robust Geographic Information System (GIS) that contains all relevant information about the systems is critical for BULASKI as an asset management tool, for leakage detection, for hydraulic modelling and for geographical mapping of the systems. In an assignment from Royal HaskoningDHV, GeoSpace built the GIS of the water supply system. GeoSpace also provided courses to BULASKI on how to add more information to the GIS and on how to perform the essential geoprocessing tasks using QGIS software.
